Missouri man set for execution on 'emotional roller coaster,' attorney says

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 21:26:55 GMT

A man on Missouri's death row is on “an emotional roller coaster” amid efforts to spare his life with just one day before his scheduled execution, his attorney said.Michael Tisius, 42, is set to die by injection Tuesday evening at the state prison in Bonne Terre for killing two jailers in 2000 in an ill-fated effort to free a man from a county jail. He would be the third Missouri man, and the 12th nationally, put to death in 2023.A clemency request before Republican Gov. Mike Parsons focuses on several issues. Among them: Tisius was just 19 at the time of the killings; he had been neglected as a child; and a juror at his 2010 resentencing may have been illiterate — in violation of Missouri law. It's unclear when Parson will announce his decision. A message left Monday with his spokeswoman wasn’t immediately returned. The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to halt the execution based on Tisius' age when the crime occurred. A federal judge last week stayed the execution over the cla...

Demonstrators from across the country began gathering on Monday outside the Colorado Capitol as part of a sit-in protest, calling on Gov. Jared Polis to ban all guns in a move that the governor and supporters alike agree is unconstitutional. The newly formed national organization, Here4TheKids, was founded by two women of color who have called for only white women to participate in the first protest set for Colorado, asking people of color and those with disabilities to instead participate in a remote campaign.“While acknowledging everyone’s agency, Here4TheKids respectfully asks white women to put their bodies on the ground, as marginalized communities have always done and continue to do,” the group said in a statement. “Historically, white women are least likely to be brutalized by the police. Their multiple intersections of privilege and power support the movement, as they participate in an act of civil disobedience, occupy physical space and demand change.”...

Florida appears to have arranged for a group of South American migrants to be transported from Texas to California and dropped off in Sacramento, California's attorney general said, noting that he's looking into whether any crimes may have been committed. If true, the 16 Colombian and Venezuelan migrants who turned up at the Roman Catholic Church diocese’s headquarters in Sacramento on Friday would be the latest to have been moved from a Republican-led state to one led by Democrats.Attorney General Rob Bonta said that although the circumstances surrounding their arrival in the California capital are still being investigated, the migrants had documentation that appeared to have been issued by Florida. He also said he's evaluating whether violations of civil or criminal law took place.“While we continue to collect evidence, I want to say this very clearly: State-sanctioned kidnapping is not a public policy choice, it is immoral and disgusting,” Bonta said in a statement. The migrants ent...

Meet Cut Paper Character Dakota Noot

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 21:26:55 GMT

Artist Dakota Noot turns scissors, paint, and tape into a lively playland of cut paper characters and scenarios, using his body (and maybe yours) as a stage to activate darkly whimsical drawing, painting, performance, video, and installation. Like a paper doll’s accouterments in a quirky dialog with surrealism, Noot’s exploration of queer and Midwestern identity is at once wholesome and subversive, fantastical and funny, pointed and poignant. A parade of human-animal hybrids and intimate releasing of pop-culture pressures, Noot’s world of finely detailed, exuberantly chromatic, and endlessly inventive expressions range from movement videos to full-room, often interactive, multimedia installations. Noot is currently engaged in a week-long residency at Coaxial Arts, which culminates this weekend in two nights of performance around the theme of cooking meat starring his boisterous character Medora, the Queen of Steaks, with the goal, as Noot says, to “laugh, cry, and question why.”Dako...

The first words from Rose Zhang after the 20-year-old Stanford student capped off one of the more remarkable 13-day stretches in golf were telling.“What is happening?” she said.More tantalizing is what happens next.Hype rules the day in a society built around social media, and Zhang is one of the rare athletes who delivered. The Stanford sophomore won her second straight NCAA title and then 13 days later was awash in wonder when she won the Mizuho Americas Open in her professional debut.Women’s golf has not seen this level of anticipation since Michelle Wie West turned pro at age 15 equipped with blue-chip sponsors like Nike and Sony.Zhang walked, talked and played like it was any other tournament. She is so comfortable with who she is that expectations are not part of the equation.“I honestly didn’t even expect to make the cut,” she said Sunday evening as she sat next to a trophy stuffed with a bouquet of roses. “And the reason why I say this is because I don’t think about my expec...
