Women’s golf: Gophers freshman Isabella McCauley shoots herself back into contention at NCAA regionals

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 23:20:05 GMT

Isabella McCauley bounced back from a rough opening round with a 5-under, second-round 67 at the NCAA Westfield Regional on Tuesday to put herself right in the thick of advancing heading into Wednesday’s final round.McCauley and fellow Gophers freshman Mariana Mesones are competing as individuals. Their only path of advancing to the NCAA Championship is by being the top finishing individual who isn’t already advancing with their team to next week’s championships. That possibility seemed out of reach after McCauley was 2 over after Round 1.But her round Tuesday — which included five birdies, four of which came on the big nine, versus no bogeys — has her firmly in the hunt. McCauley is currently 3 under for the tournament, good for a tie for ninth overall. The current individual advancer would be Xavier’s Abby Kiefer, who sits at 5 under. But that number could be a moving target. Xavier, for instance, is just three strokes out of a top-five team fini...

Electric vehicles charging station may be coming to St. Charles

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 23:20:05 GMT

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The City of St. Charles is thinking about going electric. On Tuesday, the city council discussed installing charging stations for electric vehicles throughout the area.St. Charles is one of many municipalities that is making that change."I remember days ago, people thought it was in the future. Ten years ago, we were instrumental in starting the EVIT program," said Michael Myers, instructor for the IBEW Training Center. "Ten years ago, we started instructing journeyman wiremen on the installation of charging stations. When it comes to charging stations, there's not much to do. You bolt it to the ground, you wire it up, and it's done. The real problem comes in with the calculations. How much load can I put on that building? How many can I put on there? This is one of the issues they're going to come up tonight is, do we want level one chargers or level two chargers, or what are we expecting? I think the first thing they have to realize is what our goal is." Morga...

California to pay $24M for in-custody death of Edward Bronstein

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 23:20:05 GMT

California will pay a $24 million civil rights settlement to the family of a man who died in police custody after screaming “I can't breathe” as multiple officers restrained him while trying to take a blood sample, lawyers said Tuesday. Seven California Highway Patrol officers and a nurse were charged with involuntary manslaughter earlier this year in connection with the 2020 death of Edward Bronstein, age 38. Annee Della Donna and Eric Dubin, attorneys for Bronstein's young children, said it's the largest civil rights settlement of its kind by the state of California, and the second largest nationally since the city of Minneapolis paid $27 million in the George Floyd case. The attorneys scheduled a news conference in Los Angeles for Wednesday to provide details. The settlement comes amid renewed scrutiny of potentially fatal restraints following last week's death of a New York City subway rider, Jordan Neely, who was placed in a chokehold by a U.S. Marine veteran. Bronstein's death...

A 49-year-old man from Pomona was found guilty by a federal jury for the felony offense of intentionally touching the inner thigh of a woman sleeping next to him on a flight to Los Angeles, authorities announced Tuesday.  The incident occurred on Feb. 17, 2020, after Mohammad Jawad Ansari boarded a flight at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport that was bound for LAX, according to a news release from the United States Attorney’s Office.  Ansari was seated by the window in the tenth row of the plane while the victim occupied the middle seat. According to evidence presented at the four-day trial, the victim, who was wearing a dress, fell asleep not long after the flight took off with the armrest separating her from the 49-year-old man.  “At some point during the flight to Los Angeles, Ansari placed his left hand on the victim’s right knee and knowingly, intentionally, and without the victim’s consent, moved his hand to her inner thigh,” the release stated. “The person sit...

Warriors coach Steve Kerr doubles down on flopping comment after Game 4 loss

SAN FRANCISCO — Steve Kerr didn’t get much sleep Monday night. How could he?Kerr had a lot on his mind after the Warriors squandered a seven-point lead at the start of the fourth quarter of Game 4 . They had opportunities down the stretch to pull off a series-tying win, but couldn’t catch a break, resulting in a tough 104-101 loss in Los Angeles. In the immediate aftermath of the defeat that put the Warriors in a 3-1 series hole and on the brink of elimination, Kerr said he thought the Lakers “took some flops and were rewarded” down the stretch. “I’ll have to see the replays. Maybe I’m wrong,” Kerr said. “Maybe those were all illegal screens but it didn’t feel like it watching the game.” One day later, Kerr doubled down on his post-Game 4 comments.“There was definitely some gamesmanship,” Kerr said after a team meeting Tuesday afternoon. “And look, I give them credit. If you can sell a call in t...

Warriors down 3-1: Comebacks are rare, but this core has done it before

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 23:20:05 GMT

Coming back from down 3-1 in an NBA playoff series is no small feat.Entering this year’s second round, there have been 277 instances of a team falling into a 3-1 series hole in NBA history. Only 13 of them have come back to win the series — a measly 4.7%.Those are the odds stacked against the Warriors entering Wednesday night’s Game 5 against the Lakers, who need to win just one more game to advance to the Western Conference finals. But if any team knows how to fight through not one, not two, but three straight elimination games and win them all, it’s this Warriors core of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green. After all, they’ve done it once before — and been on the other end of another one.Back in the 2016 Western Conference finals, the Warriors were down 3-1 to the Oklahoma City Thunder in a series that followed the same path as this Lakers one — losing Game 1 at home before a comfortable Game 2 win, then dropping Games 3 and 4 on the road. When the Warriors returned t...
