Ever since its Broadway premiere in 2013, “Kinky Boots” has lived out loud with gargantuan, affirming energy. It’s a production that backs up its talk about inclusivity, taking even more steps toward this goal in recent years with shifts in dialogue that rightfully pushes away from a harmful gender binary.City Lights Theater Company’s take on the vibrant, six-time Tony Award winner does what the show has always been designed to do. There are lots of high-octane performances guided by directors Lisa Mallette and Mark Anderson Phillips, shaking the old theater space in downtown San Jose to the studs. While the staging and choreography have a few too many moments devoid of necessary precision, bouncing out of the theater on an inclusive high is mighty rewarding.Harvey Fierstein’s humorous and tender book, with a wide range of musical styles from Cyndi Lauper does plenty to wrangle the many emotional storylines. Adapted from the 2005 film of the same title, it’s based on a true sto...Greenland ice core suggests potential for disastrous sea level rise

By Laura Paddison | CNNA recently discovered ice core taken from beneath Greenland’s ice sheet decades ago has revealed that a large part of the country was ice-free around 400,000 years ago, when temperatures were similar to those the world is approaching now, according to a new report – an alarming finding that could have disastrous implications for sea level rise. The study overturns previous assumptions that most of Greenland’s ice sheet has been frozen for millions of years, the authors said. Instead, moderate, natural warming led to large-scale melting and sea level rise of more than 1.4 meters (4.6 feet), according to the report published Thursday in the journal Science.“When you look at what nature did in the past, as geoscientists, that’s our best clue to the future,” said Paul Bierman, a scientist at the University of Vermont and a lead author of the study. What it indicates is “frightening,” he told CNN.Levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are 1.5 times higher now tha...Pruneyard Cinemas isn’t toying around with its ‘Barbie’-themed cocktails

It’s a “Barbie” world at Pruneyard Cinemas this week. In anticipation for what’s expected to be a huge response to the new movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, which opens Friday, the dine-in movie theater in Campbell has outpinked itself. The bartending staff at the Cedar Room Lounge have concocted a pair of cocktails themed to the movie, and they’re not toying around. The Malibu Barbie — made with Malibu rum, of course — is a refreshing sipper, while the Greta Gerwig, named after the movie’s director and made with watermelon vodka, tastes a bit like a Jolly Rancher candy and goes down very easy.Moviegoers can take photos in a life-size Barbie box in the lobby of Pruneyard Cinemas in Campbell. “Barbie,” starring Margot Robbie as the famous doll, opens July 21, 2023. RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazilian researchers say the number of violent deaths last year reached the lowest level in more than a decade, puzzling some experts because there has been an explosion of firearms circulating in the country in recent years.About 47,500 people were slain in Latin America’s largest nation in 2022, said a report Thursday by the Brazilian Forum on Public Safety, an independent group that tracks crimes. Its statistics are widely used as a benchmark because there are no official statistics on a national level. While the number of killings in 2022 was down 2.4% from the previous year, it remained roughly even with levels recorded since 2019. The last time Brazil had less violent deaths was in 2011, with 47,215 killings. The fall in homicides has left many public security experts somewhat puzzled, as it has been accompanied by a sharp increase in the number of firearms held by Brazilians. Some studies have suggested that more guns circulating among the populati...Bolivia boosts lithium resources estimate, cementing spot as global leader
