By Robert Jablon | Associated PressLOS ANGELES — California’s governor announced Friday that he won’t ask the state Supreme Court to block parole for Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten, paving the way for her release after serving 53 years in prison for two infamous murders. In a brief statement, the governor’s office said an appeal was unlikely to succeed.Newsom is disappointed, the statement said.“More than 50 years after the Manson cult committed these brutal killings, the victims’ families still feel the impact,” the statement said.Van Houten, now in her 70s, is serving a life sentence for helping Manson and other followers in the 1969 killings of Leno LaBianca, a grocer in Los Angeles, and his wife, Rosemary.Van Houten could be freed in about two weeks after the parole board reviews her record and processes paperwork for her release from the California Institution for Women in Corona, her attorney Nancy Tetreault said. She was recommende...Review: ‘Joy Ride’ is a glorious, raunchy, gross-out comedy

By Jocelyn Noveck | Associated PressIf you’re like me, there comes a moment of truth in raunchy film comedies when you decide whether to fully join in the fun — or ride it out on the fence. It often comes in a key early comic scene. Can they pull it off? If so you’ll be putty in their hands for two hours, ready to chuckle along no matter how gross it gets (think of that bridal dress fitting in “Bridesmaids.”) If not, you’ll shuffle uncomfortably on the sidelines, feeling rather like a prude. In first-time director Adele Lim’s ebullient, chaotic, nothing’s-too-gross-if-it’s funny road comedy “Joy Ride,” that moment came for me when watching Ashley Park swallow a disgusting concoction in a drinking contest, pretending all’s fine as her insides erupt. Expert comic chops cannot be faked. Park had me from that guzzle (and cemented it later with her Gollum impression.)Yet the impressive thing about “Joy Ride,” a c...SF Giants top prospect Kyle Harrison ruled out of Futures Game with hamstring strain

SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants’ top pitching prospect, Kyle Harrison, will not participate in the Futures Game this weekend after suffering a hamstring injury following his last start, the club announced Friday.Harrison, a 21-year-old left-hander out of De La Salle (Concord) High School, will be re-evaluated following the All-Star break, the Giants announced Friday. He was diagnosed with a moderate strain in his right hamstring, which can typically sideline players for up to a month.Harrison suffered the injury in a training session between starts, the club said. It puts a damper on an up-and-down first half in his first season at Triple-A. While he has flashed glimpses of his immense potential, he hasn’t harnessed his sinker-slider-changeup mix to be able to throw consistent strikes. Harrison is striking out nearly a batter and a half per inning but also averaging nearly a walk per inning, too, while posting a 4.97 ERA in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League.Rated the t...San Francisco city attorney fires back at homeless advocates' allegations

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu is firing back at homeless advocates who claimed the city violated a court-ordered injunction the protects people living on the streets. The City Attorney filed a motion in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California refuting allegations made by the Coalition on Homelessness. The case, Coalition on Homelessness v. City and County of San Francisco, has prevented city officials from forcing any homeless person to move from a public space, such as a sidewalk. Judge Donna Ryu ruled in favor of the coalition on December 23, 2022. Since then, "the city has gone to great lengths to comply with the injunction and remains committed to a services-first approach to addressing homelessness," Chiu said. "Instead of working through minor issues with the city, Plaintiffs have spent months unjustifiably painting San Francisco as a violator of people’s rights. Despite the superficial heft of Plaintiffs’ nearly 400-page fi...Ohtani in Angels’ lineup as DH while nursing blister on finger against Dodgers

LOS ANGELES (AP) — All-Star Shohei Ohtani is in the lineup as the designated hitter and is set to bat leadoff for the Los Angeles Angels in their Freeway Series opener against the Dodgers. The two-way superstar is nursing a blister on the middle finger of his right hand. He was held hitless Wednesday to close out a three-game sweep by the San Diego Padres. Ohtani left Tuesday’s start as a pitcher because of the blister. He also has a cracked fingernail.“He’s fine. He hasn’t said anything about it. It doesn’t affect him to hit,” manager Phil Nevin said before Friday night’s game at Dodger Stadium. “I’m really trying to get him as many pitches as I can.”Ohtani won’t pitch in next week’s All-Star game in Seattle, but if he’s healthy enough, he will remain the starting DH for the American League. The Angels are without fellow All-Star slugger Mike Trout, who had surgery Wednesday for a broken left wrist after fouling off a pitch. He’s ...John Deere Classic Scores

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Bailey Tardy picked a good time and a beautiful location to play her best golf.Tardy made eagle on the par-5 sixth hole at Pebble Beach for the second straight day as part of a torrid start to her second round Friday in the U.S. Women’s Open, and she held steady the rest of the way for a 4-under 68 and a one-shot lead among the early starters. She fit the profile of a 36-hole leader at a historic Women’s Open in which the stars have been nearly as absent as the sun behind a constant marine layer over the Monterey Peninsula.Tardy is a 26-year-old rookie on the LPGA Tour who has made only four cuts this year, her best finish a tie for 23rd in Hawaii. Her only professional victory was two years ago on the LPGA’s developmental tour. She is No. 455 in the women’s world ranking. And she was not the least bit surprised when she walked off the 18th green at 7-under 137, leading Allisen Corpuz (70) and Hyo Joo Kim (71) by two shots.“I’v...California Gov.
