JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The majority-white and Republican-led Mississippi Legislature is taking final steps to expand the the territory of a state-run police department inside the capital city of Jackson, which is majority-Black and governed by Democrats.Critics say the proposal would stomp on local self-governance and create unequal systems of justice in different parts Jackson, which has the highest percentage of Black residents of any major U.S. city.Supporters say they are trying to reduce crime in a city of about 150,000 residents, which had more than 100 homicides for each of the past three years.Senators on Thursday passed the final version of a bill that Democratic Sen. John Horhn of Jackson called “toxic,” with 31 Republicans voting yes and 15 Democrats voting no.The House is expected to pass the bill Friday and send it to Republican Gov. Tate Reeves.

The Kingston Frontenacs will not be hosting the 2024 edition of the Memorial Cup, with the selection committee instead choosing the Saginaw Spirit in Michigan. This will be the first time since 1998 that an American CHL team has hosted the Memorial Cup and the first time ever for an OHL team based in the USA. In a statement on Wednesday, the Frontenacs said they were disappointed in the decision because despite the strength of all four team’s -Niagara, Sault Ste. MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — The hopes of American men’s tennis rest largely on the talented rackets of Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul. But a Spanish roadblock named Carlos Alcaraz is in the way – never more illustrated by the last few days at the Miami Open. Two days after routing the Australian Open semifinalist Paul, the top-ranked Alcaraz took his spectacular arsenal to the highest-ranked American man in No. 10 Fritz and blasted into the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at Hard Rock Stadium. Before a packed crowd that included John McEnroe and was split in support, Alcaraz broke Fritz’s serve in the first game. He used that one break to squeak out the first set and finished the match in tidy 1 hour, 18 minutes. Alcaraz faced just two break points and turned away both chances as he improved his match record to 18-1 in 2023.“I took the opportunity of every break point I had,” the Spaniard said. “I was solid and aggressive at the same time.”This was the first meeting between the two and ...Latest news
