French prosecutors are investigating the potential poisoning of former Russian state TV journalist turned Kremlin critic Marina Ovsyannikova after she was suddenly taken ill in Paris this week.Ovsyannikova reportedly called for help on Thursday afternoon “because she had collapsed outside her home in the 6th arrondissement and feared poisoning,” a spokesperson with the Paris Criminal Court said. The Paris prosecutor’s office said it had opened an investigation into the incident and police were reportedly examining her apartment as part of the probe. Ovsyannikova, who made headlines around the world in March last year when she denounced Moscow’s war on Ukraine during a live Russian TV broadcast, remained under medical supervision on Thursday, but her condition had improved, according to Secretary-General of Reporters Without Borders Christophe Deloire.Deloire said Thursday evening on social media that the organization had been by Ovsyannikova’s si...Boston police increasing presence near religious, cultural institutions amid calls for day of protests

What a day we had yesterday with highs reaching the low 70s for some as some sunshine held on. Today, it’ll be another nice day, just cooler, as highs hold in the upper 50s and lower 60s, coolest in the Worcester Hills. There will be a little bit of a breeze too, aiding in that cooler feel to the air today. The weekend looks to feature mainly dry weather too as a seasonable chill wins out. Early sun fades behind mid to high level clouds tomorrow, then clouds fade to increasing sun on Sunday. Both days reach highs near 60. Any rain chance? A few showers/sprinkles are possible near the South Coast Saturday night and early Sunday morning, especially across the Islands. All and all, it’ll be a good October weekend to get outside and enjoy Fall activities/festivities. Early next week, it’ll be cool with a few spot showers Monday and a better chance for scattered showers Tuesday.New Hampshire man pleads guilty to making threatening call to U.S. House member

TALLINN, Estonia (AP) — Russian authorities on Friday detained three lawyers representing imprisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalny after searching their homes, the politician’s allies said. The move was an attempt to “completely isolate Navalny,” his ally Ivan Zhdanov said on social media. Navalny, 47, has been behind bars since January 2021, serving a 19-year prison sentence but has been able to get messages out regularly and keep up with the news. The raids targeting Vadim Kobzev, Igor Sergunin and Alexei Liptser are part of a criminal case on charges of participating in an extremist group, Zhdanov said. All three were detained after the search, apparently as suspects in the case, Navalny’s team said on Telegram.Independent Russian media also reported a raid at a law firm that employs another of Navalny’s lawyers, Olga Mikhailova. According to reports, she is currently not in Russia. BEIJING (AP) — The European Union’s top foreign policy official warned Friday that public sentiment in Europe could turn more protectionist if the region’s trade deficit with China is not reduced.Josep Borrell, the EU high representative for foreign affairs, called for improved access for European companies that want to export to or invest in China. He said that political leaders in Europe could face pressure from voters to disengage from the world’s second-largest economy. “And we don’t want to disengage and much less, much less, to decouple from China,” Borrell said in a speech at Peking University, one of China’s top schools. The EU trade deficit with China topped $17 billion in September, bringing the total for the first nine months of the year to $170 billion, according to Chinese trade figures released Friday.Borrell, who held talks later Friday with China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi, is the latest EU official to visit China as the two sides lay the...Takeaways from AP’s reporting on Antarctica’s burgeoning krill fishery

ABOARD THE ALLANKAY off Antarctica (AP) — The frigid waters around Antarctica are emerging as a major battleground between industry and activists as advances in technology and new demand for krill as a dietary supplement drive more and more fishing of the shrimp-like crustacean. That has some scientists warning that stricter controls must be put in place so krill can continue its vital role as a buffer against climate change and sustenance for whales, penguins and other marine mammals.
