Toronto screening room to be renamed after Oscar-winning director Norman Jewison TORONTO — Oscar-winning Canadian filmmaker Norman Jewison is getting his namesake on a private screening room in Toronto.The Hazelton Hotel, located in the city’s high-end Yorkville neighbourhood, says it will rename its 25-seat cinema after the 97-year-old Toronto director.Jewison is known for an array of Hollywood hits that include “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Moonstruck” and “In the Heat of the Night” and he’s also founder of the Canadian Film Centre.The hotel’s Silver Screening Room will officially become the Norman Jewison Cinema during an invitation-only event held on Sept. 11, timed for the Toronto International Film Festival.The organizers say that high-profile guests, friends and some of Jewison’s collaborators will be in attendance.This isn’t the first space at the Hazelton to honour a legendary Canadian artist. (AP) — Wisconsin Democrats on Tuesday proposed barring the use of expensive, sham lawsuits to silence criticism after a Republican state senator was accused of trying to bankrupt a local news outlet for reporting on his alleged use of a homophobic slur.The Wausau Pilot & Review reported in 2021 that local businessman Cory Tomczyk, who became a state senator in January, called a 13-year-old boy a homophobic slur during a city meeting where the boy testified in support of a diversity and inclusion measure that had sparked divides in the northern Wisconsin community.Tomczyk denied using the slur and sued the newspaper for defamation. In the course of that lawsuit, three people who were present at the meeting swore that they heard Tomczyk use the word. In a deposition, Tomczyk also admitted to having used the word on other occasions, The New York Times reported. St. Sabina Church hands out free water amid dangerously hot temperatures CHICAGO — As dangerously hot temperatures overtake Chicago, Saint Sabina Catholic Church is helping some South Side residents enjoy a cold, refreshing reprieve from the heat.On the corner of 79th and Racine, WGN News cameras rolled as a team of volunteers from the Englewood-area church handed out free water.   Hot, humid weather: Excessive Heat Warning in place for Chicago area The good deed comes after Father Michael Pfleger took to Facebook to ask for donations for Wednesday’s water giveaway. Central Texans turn to prayer, music amid drought HAYS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) --- Even with Tuesday's rainfall, all of Central Texas is still in an extreme drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. It's left some people turning to prayer for more rain and others creating music to spread awareness of the situation. Praying for rainOn Monday, a group of people stood in front of the Hays County Historic Courthouse in San Marcos and prayed for rain."We got farmers, ranchers, all kinds of folks here and we're just asking the Lord to send us rain. Our aquifers are at historic lows. Our rivers are drying up. So we've got to have some divine help from heaven," Jimmy Darnell said.
