Why are movie theater snacks so expensive?

Why are movie theater snacks so expensive? (NEXSTAR) - Whether you’re going to the movies to love, cry, or care, as Nicole Kidman once said in her now-iconic advertising campaign, there’s a pretty good chance you’re also going for the popcorn and candy. The price tag on your snacks may make you cry, though. It’s a common gripe about movie theaters – the food and drinks are expensive. Take a box of Dots at Marcus Theatres, for example. They’re listed at $4.99 on the chain’s online ordering system. A box of Cookie Dough Bites at an AMC Theatres location in Chicago sells for $5.69 if you order online. The same boxes of either candy are listed as $1.24 at Walmart. A popcorn will run you anywhere between $7.65 and $10.29 between the two theaters. Meanwhile, you can buy a box of six bags of AMC Theatres branded microwave popcorn for less than $5 at Walmart.  Stuck at a red light? You may need to let it know you’re there So why do movie theater concessions cost you so much? There are a number of factors t...

Lowest-paying jobs in St. Louis

Published Mon, 23 Dec 2024 14:00:07 GMT

Lowest-paying jobs in St. Louis The U.S. may be one of the wealthiest countries in the world, but financial inequality prevails within its borders. That divide is growing, especially between the poorest and richest U.S. residents. The middle class is shrinking. In 2021, just half of adults lived in a middle-income household, a huge drop from 61% in the 70s. This dip meant some middle-class adults broke into the high-income bracket. At the same time, the share of lower-income residents is growing: 29% of adults lived in low-income households in 2021, compared to 25% in 1971.Wages over this period grew at all income levels, but the rich got significantly higher bumps. Pew Charitable Trusts found that high incomes grew 69% over the past 50 years, while low incomes grew just 45%. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated and further exposed these harsh financial gaps. The difference in pay for the highest- and lowest-paying jobs in the U.S. last year was over eightfold: from about $28,000 for entertainment attendants to over $2...

Their wedding rings were gone.“Safety was the main concern. These are all material things,” Gilles Gerling said. The fires nearly wiped out the historic town of 13,000 people and were still not fully contained Friday night on some parts of the island. Maui County raised the number of confirmed deaths to 80 Friday night, and Gov. Josh Green warned that the toll would likely rise as search and rescue operations continue.
