The St. Paul City Council approved the maximum city property tax levy for 2024 on Wednesday, setting the limit on the sum total of all property taxes collected in the city from taxable properties. The levy cannot surpass $208.5 million, a 3.7% increase over the present year. Council President Amy Brendmoen emphasized that the budget numbers proposed by St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter’s office could yet be revised downward by the time the final 2024 city budget and tax levy are approved in mid-December, but they cannot be increased. In recent years, the council has found ways to trim the mayor’s proposed levy increase.Under the mayor’s budget proposal, the city level for general operations is $160 million. An additional $23 million covers the city’s debt service, and $22.5 million funds the library agency. The St. Paul Port Authority levies $2.6 million. The maximum tax levy for the St. Paul Housing and Redevelopment Authority is an additional $6.3 million.Truth-in-...Double shooting leaves 1 dead in Dutchtown

(AP Photo/Jeff Roberson)Adding new players to a veteran roster can be tricky, but for the Colorado women’s basketball team, it’s been a smooth transition.CU, which officially started practice on Tuesday, returns four starters and eight rotational players from last year’s team that went 25-9 and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. In the offseason, however, the Buffs added senior transfers Maddie Nolan, a 5-foot-11 guard from Michigan, and Sara-Rose Smith, a 6-foot-1 guard from Missouri.“They’re incredible,” CU head coach JR Payne said. “They’ve done a great job. One week in (after arriving this summer), you wouldn’t have known that they were new to Colorado or new to our team. So have penalties and way too many sacks. But, as the Buffs prepare to host No. 8 USC on Saturday (10 a.m., Fox), perhaps the most pressing need is to find a running game.“We’ve got to run the ball,” head coach Deion Sanders said this week. “Not only that, we’ve got to implement short and intermediate, as well as the deep passing game. But the main thing, you’ve got to protect your quarterback. I don’t care who you are, you’ve got to protect the quarterback.”Shedeur Sanders has ...Erratic driver in custody after police pursuit in downtown Los Angeles

NEW YORK (AP) — Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred hopes owners will hold a vote on the Oakland Athletics’ proposed move to Las Vegas when they meet from Nov. 14-16 at Arlington, Texas.Manfred discussed the timetable Wednesday during an interview with The Associated Press discussing 2023 attendance. Las Vegas would become the fourth home for a franchise that started in Philadelphia from 1901-54, moved to Kansas City for 13 seasons and arrived in Oakland for the 1968 season.Since the Washington Senators became the Texas Rangers for the 1972 season, the only team to relocate was the Montreal Expos, who became the Washington Nationals in 2005.The A’s said in April they planned to move to a ballpark to be constructed in Las Vegas and agreed the following month with Bally’s and Gaming & Leisure Properties to build a stadium on the Tropicana hotel site along the Las Vegas Strip. The Nevada Legislature approved $380 million in public financing in June in legislation signed by...Kurtenbach: The 49ers’ new-look defense was already impressive. SANTA CLARA — Nick Bosa’s preseason-long holdout ended on a Wednesday. The following Sunday, he played more than half of the Niners’ defensive snaps against the Steelers. One Sunday later, he played 79 percent of the Niners’ snaps. Four days after that, another 78 percent. That’s a lot of snaps to play after coming in cold. And while Bosa played well — one sack, seven tackles, with two for a loss — the soon-to-be 26-year-old defensive end said Wednesday that he underestimated the challenge of revving up the engine.“Just getting thrown right into football, I was feeling it,” Bosa said. “I think my body is adapted to football now.”That’s a scary thought if you’re Arizona Cardinals quarterback Josh Dobbs, who will come to the South Bay to play the Niners on Sunday. In fact, it should scare anyone on the 49ers’ schedule and any team interested in playing in the NFC playoffs.Related ArticlesSan Francisco 49ers | Kur...How the Warriors could be surprisingly impacted by the Damian Lillard trade

The NBA had at least one more blockbuster trade to complete before the 2023 season began. Golden State wasn’t directly involved, but the big swap will surely impact the team this year and beyond.All-Star Damian Lillard will join forces with former MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks in a three-team trade featuring Milwaukee, the Portland Trail Blazers and the Phoenix Suns. Former Suns center Deandre Ayton and Bucks guard Jrue Holiday move to Portland along with a 2019 draft pick and two pick swaps as part of the deal, while center Jusuf Nurkic and guard Grayson Allen move to the Suns. For the Warriors, though, the trade will impact their short- and long-term roster plans.Steph Curry has long praised Holiday as the toughest defender he has played against, and reports indicate the Blazers are open to moving Holiday for assets. With Holiday in the last season of his four-year contract with a player option for next season, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Warriors check in to see wha...Latest news
