Twins position breakdown: designated hitter

Published Fri, 22 Nov 2024 02:20:59 GMT

Twins position breakdown: designated hitter The Twins didn’t enter the 2023 season expecting or intending for Byron Buxton to turn into a full-time designated hitter.Their preference, since trading full-time designated hitter Nelson Cruz away in 2021, has been to use that spot to rotate players in and out, giving them a day off their feet as needed while keeping their bat in the lineup. But they were unable to do that for most of last season.2023 RECAPBuxton underwent knee surgery late in the 2022 season, and come spring training, the Twins took their time as he got ramped up for the season. Eventually, the Twins laid out a plan in which he would start the season at designated hitter before ultimately building off of that and moving into playing center field. That didn’t happen.Buxton never appeared in a major-league game in center field, instead serving as the team’s everyday designated hitter for much of the season. It was a difficult year offensively for the star, who hit .207 with a .732 OPS — a full 100 points lower ...

Mikaela Shiffrin turns page on busy offseason, begins pursuit of a 6th overall World Cup title By PAT GRAHAM (AP Sports Writer)Keeping up with Mikaela Shiffrin’s offseason endeavors may be just as challenging as catching up to her in a ski race. She’s constantly full speed ahead. The all-time winningest World Cup ski racer attended a Taylor Swift concert, visited a camp where a lodge was named after her, picked up an award at the ESPYs, stopped by to see her boyfriend/fellow ski racer Aleksander Aamodt Kilde in Norway and wrote an article for Time on singer Noah Kahan. On the training front, Shiffrin immersed herself in trail running, adapted to a coaching change and adopted a new attitude — “relaxed and flowy,” she called it — into her racing. The five-time World Cup overall winner has come to realize it’s OK to build throughout a season and that she doesn’t need to be at her elite best when the season kicks off Saturday with a giant slalom race in Soelden, Austria.“I’m trying to take a little bit more of an approach of giving myself time to build into my best form,” the ...

The Starfish Project: Helping with housing — one family at a time Here’s a ray of sunshine in these incredibly troubled times, courtesy of Northfield, a small Minnesota town with a big heart — and home to the Hernandez family.Victor and Lorena Hernandez (whose names I’ve changed for privacy) came to the U.S. from Mexico 20 years ago as teenagers. They met, married and had three children, overcoming language, immigration and citizenship barriers along the way. For two decades, they have worked hard and paid taxes. Victor works in manufacturing and does landscaping on the side. Lorena cleans houses. For them, the American dream of owning a home remained just that — a dream. That changed when their parish priest introduced them to Bob Thacker and Karen Cherewatuk, a couple who had long been concerned about the lack of affordable hou...
