The new breed of long-haul, low-cost airlines: What you need to know By John Walton | CNNYou’ve seen them on TikTok and on Instagram: people flying on the new generation of long-haul, low-cost airlines where the fares sound too good to be true.Flights from New York to Paris for $200? They’re out there, if you’re able to be flexible, and if you’re willing to skip extras — depending on the airline, that could include checked bags, meals, entertainment and the bar cart. But what’s different on each of these independent airlines? Let’s break it down.Comparing long-haul, low-cost carriers to other airlines that bill themselves as “full-service,” you’ll often get the same newer planes like the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350, sometimes with the same seats and entertainment screens. To an extent, airline food is airline food, and many folks already pack their own meals even on full-service airlines. These carriers can be a great deal if you go into them with the understanding that you’re paying low-cost fares, so you should expect a low-cost experience onboard.Ove...

49ers’ defense seeks answers after Bengals, Burrow carve it up

49ers’ defense seeks answers after Bengals, Burrow carve it up SANTA CLARA — On the Bengals’ third play from scrimmage Sunday afternoon, the 49ers’ defense surrounded quarterback Joe Burrow with the kind of pressure it lacked six days earlier, failing to record a single sack in a Monday night loss to the Minnesota Vikings. On third-and-10, Burrow backpedaled as the pocket collapsed around him and found no safe haven. Arik Armstead’s 290-pound frame soon hung from his shoulder blades. But soon enough, the 49ers defensive lineman and another one of his cohorts, Nick Bosa, were on their backs in the backfield. Still upright, Burrow unleashed a completion to Tee Higgins, converting the first down, and five plays later was celebrating in Levi’s Stadium’s north end zone. The tone was set. The 49ers’ defense, which looked so daunting just a few weeks ago, was hardly able to slow down the Bengals’ All-Pro quarterback, let alone take him down, in an eventual 31-17 defeat, entering their bye week with a third strai...

Tuberville says he will keep blocking military promotions despite Israel’s war

Tuberville says he will keep blocking military promotions despite Israel’s war (CNN) — Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who has held up military promotions for nine months, slammed a proposal being floated to change the chamber’s rules to allow a vote on many of the nominations en masse and attacked the White House and Senate Democrats for not negotiating with him.“It’s typical of this place. This administration would rather burn the Senate down and that’s what would happen. … If you change the rules of the Senate then it lasts forever,” Tuberville told CNN’s Manu Raju. “So they would rather burn down the Senate than negotiate.”All Senate Democrats would have to join with nine Republicans for this latest plan to work. The bloc of nominees wouldn’t include some higher-level military promotions, which senators would still want to confirm one at a time. The proposal could go to the Senate Rules Committee as soon as this week, a source told CNN Thursday.Tuberville has been holding up military promotions since February because of a Department of Defense policy tha...

Slumping Ajax turns to former player John van ’t Schip as coach for rest of calamitous season AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) — Slumping in last place in the Dutch league, four-time European champion Ajax named former player John van ’t Schip as coach Monday for the rest of a so-far calamitous season.Ajax said in a statement van ’t Schip will be interim coach “before stepping into a function in technical management” in July. The appointment came one day after Ajax lost 5-2 to league-leading PSV Eindhoven and one week after coach Maurice Steijn was fired just seven league games into a three-year contract.Ajax’s only league win was on the opening day in August and fan disorder forced a home game against defending champion Feyenoord to be stopped and completed three days later as a 4-0 loss. The Dutch giant also is last in its Europa League group without a win in three games. Van ’t Schip’s previous coaching job was with the Greece national team two years ago. His assistant then, Michael Valkanis, rejoins him for the rest of the season after leaving Hapoel Tel Aviv, Ajax said.Van ’t...
