Kiszla: If Nuggets guard Jamal Murray tries to play hero ball vs. Suns superstar Devin Booker, this series won’t turn out well for Denver

PHOENIX – With a basketball game to be won, Nuggets guard Jamal Murray wrestled with his foolish pride. He lost, because a strong man’s worst enemy can be his own stubborn ego.Obsessed by a desire to prove himself the equal of Phoenix superstar Devin Booker, Murray not only got soundly beaten in one of those classic battles of one-upmanship that make pro basketball such compelling theater, Denver lost its ironclad grip on this playoff series.“We expected a win,” Murray said Friday, taking full responsibility for a 121-114 loss to the Suns. “I put that one on me.”Well, give the feisty Nuggets guard credit for recognizing the problem.Despite his team-high 32 points, the problem was Murray. He tried to do too much, bless his ever-defiant heart. He attempted to turn a team game into an individual duel against Booker. It proved to be a losing proposition in Game 3. And it could be a mistake deadly to Denver’s championship aspirations going forward. With everything from red-glaring ro...Word Game: May 6, 2023

Dear Amy: Like a lot of people these days, my adult children and many of my friends are spread out all over the country. I try to stay in touch with them by making short trips to visit them. These trips are usually four or five days (two days of which are travel days) and include the expenses of airfare, accommodations, entertainment, pet sitting, etc.I have a close friend I have met in various locations for vacations, and the last three times, she has brought a friend or family member along (at her expense) without telling me in advance. Her one friend was a very high-maintenance stranger (to me) who now shows up on all of my photos from our vacation to Yosemite. Her presence totally affected the dynamic.Another time, she invited her adult son along, again without telling me.Related ArticlesAdvice | Ask Amy: Here’s a picture of my dog, and by the way I’m autistic Advice | Ask Amy: My mom told us to eat food we didn’t pay for Advice | ...Harriette Cole: I heard the snobby things they said about my job

DEAR HARRIETTE: I went to college for nursing mainly because my mother wanted me to do that, but I was never really interested in the subject. Later, I went back for my aesthetician’s license.I have been working in a spa for the past few years, and it’s going really well. I make good money and great tips, and I love what I do.My challenge is that my family members and friends don’t respect my work. Whenever I talk about it, they act like it’s a short-term gig and that I am above this type of work. Literally, sometimes I hear comments about how I’m too smart to be doing this kind of thing.Really? I feel confident that I make more money than they do, at least some of them, and I am happy doing it.This gets under my skin sometimes. Should I say something or just shrug it off?Let Me BeRelated ArticlesAdvice | Harriette Cole: I think my child is too young for deodorant Advice | Harriette Cole: How long before I need to have this ta...What the Debt Limit Fight Is Actually About

A group of Senate Republicans hold a news conference to pass the House GOP legislation that would raise the debt limit and cut federal spending, outside the U.S. Capitol on May 3, 2023, in Washington, D.C.Photo: Chip Somodevilla/Getty ImagesIt’s hard to believe I’m typing these words, but there’s a genuine chance Congress may fail to pass an increase in the debt limit. That would mean the U.S. might then in turn default on its debt sometime in June.No one knows what would happen at that point, because it’s completely unprecedented. But it almost certainly would be deeply unpleasant, with huge job losses, unpredictable bits of the economy imploding, and knock-on effects in other countries that will make them both fear and hate us for decades. It would be the kind of massive self-inflicted wound that can be pulled off only by empires in their dotage.Congress has veered close to this disaster in the past. But I’ve always believed that it would be impossible for it to actually happen, b...King Charles III heads to Westminster Abbey for coronation

It is March 1967.I am in Saigon. I am hot and tired. I have a vicious fungus on both hands. The war is everywhere including just outside the hotel, but the adrenalin rush is so great that it tends to overcome fear. Sometimes. The memory comes back to me in the wake of the 50th anniversary of the April 29, 1973, signing of the Paris peace agreement, which led to the U.S. troop withdrawal and the return of the American POWs. However, the war did not really end until 1975.Anyway, I am waiting two hours for the call from the city editor of the Boston Herald. There were no cellphones back then, or computers or email. The notice to standby came by cable. It had to be important. I wrote about it later. The call comes in. I am expecting rave reviews for my stories. Instead, Roger Dejarlis, the city editor, and Bill Stewart, managing editor, tell me I have to catch up with Massachusetts Sen Edward W. Brooke (1967-1979) and deliver a message from Hal Clancy.
