MOSCOW (AP) — Kazakhstan’s dominant political party received slightly more than half the vote in the election for the lower house of parliament, according to preliminary results announced Monday, but the final tally of seats won’t be clear until new single-mandate races are tallied. As part of a series of political reforms in the Central Asian nation, one-third of the seats chosen in the snap election were contested by individual candidates; previously, all seats were selected by party list. The national elections commission said the Amanat party of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev received 53.9% of the vote on Sunday; five other parties cleared the 5% barrier needed to obtain seats, including parties loyal to Tokayev. The early election came on the fourth anniversary of the resignation of President Nursultan Nazarbayev, who had led Kazakhstan since independence following the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991 and who had established immense influence. His successor Tokayev ...Qatar: 4,000 World Cup huts sent to quake-hit Turkey, Syria

Qatar has sent 4,000 cabins built to house fans at last year’s World Cup to earthquake survivors in Turkey and Syria, authorities said Monday. The Associated Press watched as the latest batch of pre-fabricated cabins was loaded onto a cargo ship in the Persian Gulf. The Qatar Development Fund began shipping cabins last month and says it will send a total of 10,000 to house people displaced by the Feb. 6 earthquake.Gas-rich Qatar, one of the world’s wealthiest countries, says it had always planned to donate the mobile homes. They were needed to help house some of the 1.4 million fans who descended on the small country during soccer’s biggest tournament late last year. The brightly colored cabins, each with thin walls, were designed to hold one or two people with twin beds, a nightstand, a small table and chair, air conditioning, a toilet and a shower inside. They went for around $200 a night — $270 with board — offering a budget option for visiting fans. A magnitude 7.8 ear...Pitchfork Music Festival announces 2023 full lineup and concert dates

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- People walking and riding their bikes are getting hit by cars more often, and at an alarming rate throughout Texas, data from the Texas Department of Transportation shows. While the statistical spike is concerning for those who rely on walking or riding next to cars, they are a painful reminder to families who've lost a loved one. That includes the family of Alexei Bauereris. A driver hit the 14-year-old boy while he walked back to his northwest Austin home in 2016. Published Tue, 05 Nov 2024 14:33:46 GMT
NEW YORK – Nuggets coach Michael Malone waffled and hedged before settling on a satisfying response.Asked on Sunday afternoon whether he was still in “search mode” when it came to Denver’s bench unit, Malone was as honest as he could be with 10 games left in the regular season.“I guess if I don’t know that means yes, right?” he said. But the veteran coach knows far more than he initially conceded. On Sunday, Denver’s bench included Bruce Brown, Jeff Green and Christian Braun, and featured the return of Zeke Nnaji, who hadn’t played in six weeks due to a shoulder injury. It also, briefly, included Reggie Jackson, who was called upon once Braun got in quick foul trouble.“That second unit (was) defensively, more athletic and versatile,” Malone said of Nnaji’s availability.Despite Denver’s 108-102 win, its second unit got outscored 36-15.The trade deadline additions of Thomas Bryant (DNP – coach’s decision) and Jackson have been largely ineffective, but Malone said he was compelled...Editorial: Fund Denver Health like your life depends on it

Denver Health cannot fail. The safety-net hospital and regional Level 1 Trauma Center is in a dire financial position with the cost of providing care – especially for those with no means to pay — outstripping the revenue coming in.The state stepped up and has allocated $5 million in the 2023 budget to shore up Denver Health’s budget, but it is not enough.Providing life-saving care for those who cannot pay is a moral imperative. Denver Health not only saves lives with expert trauma care for car crash and gun violence victims, but the hospital is a last resort for uninsured individuals with chronic, treatable illnesses like homeless individuals or undocumented Coloradans with diabetes, renal failure or cancer. The City of Denver has long recognized the civic good of having a public hospital and has propped up the hospital’s operations with additional funding. Taxpayers may not realize the good of a publicly funded hospital until their moment of most dire need when their insurance ...Latest news
