(BCN) -- The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has issued a Spare the Air alert for Wednesday because of a forecast of unhealthy smog levels in the region. 'Pirates' targeting boats on Oakland estuary Smoke from fires near the California-Oregon border may also contribute to the bad air quality. You could even get a prescription for it

When Octavia Hammond of Southeast D.C. goes to the grocery store, she uses two cards to pay for what she is buying. One card is for all the fresh produce, and the other pays for everything else. The one that buys the produce, a Fresh Connect card, is distributed by the nonprofit DC Greens and its Produce RX program. It’s literally a prescription she got from a doctor, but instead of medication, the prescription is for healthy foods for her and her family.“Because of food prices, everything is super expensive these days,” said Hammond. “Just having that little extra bump, knowing that you have picky eaters and children that want to try stuff but they might not want to finish it, it’s just a good way to introduce new foods to the household and not really put a dent in your income.”Programs like this one are helping her and her family eat better, which in turn is helping the whole health care system.A study out this week in the American Heart Associat...Massive Greek wildfire now in its 11th day is the biggest ever recorded in the EU

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A massive wildfire was burning unabated in northeastern Greece for the 11th day Tuesday despite the efforts of hundreds of firefighters and a fleet of water-dropping aircraft from Greece and several of its European Union partners. After burning across vast tracts of land, the blaze in the Alexandroupolis and Evros region was mainly concentrated deep in a forest near the border with Turkey, in an area difficult to access. The wildfire, which was blamed for 20 of the 21 wildfire-related deaths in Greece last week, is the biggest in the EU since the European Forest Fire Information System started keeping records in 2000. Six planes and four helicopters were assisting 475 firefighters on the ground, backed by 100 vehicles, the fire department said. Another 260 firefighters and one helicopter were tackling flare-ups of another major fire burning for days in a forest on the southern slopes of Mount Parnitha, on the fringes of the Greek capital.Authorities are investiga...Desalojan el Zoológico Nacional tras amenaza de bomba

The US is fighting it, says wreck is a grave site

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — The U.S. government is trying to stop a planned expedition to recover items of historical interest from the sunken Titanic, citing a federal law and an international agreement that treat the shipwreck as a hallowed gravesite. The expedition is being organized by RMS Titanic Inc., the Georgia-based firm that owns the salvage rights to the world’s most famous shipwreck. The company exhibits artifacts that have been recovered from the wreck site at the bottom of the North Atlantic, from silverware to a piece of the Titanic’s hull. The government’s challenge comes more than two months after the Titan submersible imploded near the sunken ocean liner, killing five people. But this legal fight has nothing to do with the June tragedy, which involved a different company and an unconventionally designed vessel. The battle in the U.S. District Court in Norfolk, Virginia, which oversees Titanic salvage matters, hinges instead on federal law and a pact with Great Bri...Key West residents brace for impact as Hurricane Idalia approaches

UMass Memorial Medical Center “failed miserably” in its plan to maintain access to maternal care after the proposed closure of a Leominster birthing center, the city’s mayor contended Tuesday in a plea for state regulators to take a more forceful approach.Leominster Mayor Dean Mazzarella asked the Department of Public Health, where officials have said they do not have authority to force a facility to remain open, to reject UMass Memorial’s controversial plan for mitigating patient impacts from the shutdown.Because DPH deemed the Leominster maternity ward an “essential service,” the health care system was required to submit a plan outlining how patients could continue to access services without the facility.Mazzarella said the 17-page document UMass Memorial produced “confirm[s] what we in North Worcester County already knew — that very little thought and planning went in to this decision that effects [sic] the lives of the mo...Latest news
