Bay Area music star dies at 67: ‘God called one of his great ones home’ Jeffrey Foskett was one of those lucky few who ended up living his dream. The San Jose native grew up fascinated with the Beach Boys, and even played in a band that covered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame act’s songs in his early 20s, and would go on to spend much of his career singing and playing those legendary Beach Boys songs in front of untold thousands, if not millions, of appreciative fans. The dream came to a close last week when Foskett — who was a hugely important member of both the Beach Boys’ and Brian Wilson’s touring bands over the years — died after a lengthy battle with anaplastic thyroid cancer. He was 67.Foskett will be remembered by fans for his soaring falsetto, which closely resembled what Brian Wilson delivered during his primetime years in the ’60s with the Beach Boys. Those Wilson-originated vocal parts — as pretty much any fan will tell you — were the heart and soul of the Beach Boys music. Yet, even it came to his...

Greyhound bus stops are valuable assets. Here’s who’s cashing in on them By Nathaniel Meyersohn | CNNNew York  — You can’t get here from there. That’s the increasing problem facing around 60 million people who depend on intercity buses.Intercity bus lines like Greyhound, Trailways and Megabus, an overlooked but essential part of America’s transportation system, carry twice the number of people who take Amtrak every year. But the whole network faces a growing crisis: Greyhound and other private companies’ bus terminals are rapidly closing around the country.Houston, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Tampa, Louisville, Charlottesville, Portland, Oregon, and other downtown bus depots have shuttered in recent years. Bus terminals in major hubs like Chicago and Dallas are also set to close. Greyhound and other companies have relocated their stops far away from city centers, which are often inaccessible by public transit, switched to curbside service or eliminated routes altogether. These stations built decades ago are shuttering because of high operating costs, govern...

Wrap Battle: Brothers use concrete, riddles, a tarantula in competitive gift-giving tradition Sarah Hofius Hall | The Scranton Times-TribuneA competitive holiday tradition started with a steel box.Justin Gagliardi, a college student at the time, welded the box and put his younger brother’s Christmas gift inside. For more than an hour on that Christmas Eve more than 20 years ago, family watched as Joseph Gagliardi worked to cut the box open to free the remote control dog toy placed inside.“I thought, ‘I’m not going to let next year slide,’” Joseph said. For the Gagliardi brothers, what’s inside the box — or the concrete, ice or diaper, or buried in the neighbor’s yard — doesn’t matter. The tradition of hijinks and hilarity is the gift itself.“It’s about bragging rights, and who is smarter,” said Joseph, 37.Forget the wrapping paper, bows and ribbons. The brothers prefer mouse traps, tarantulas and PVC pipes, nestled — and greased — inside each other. Justin, 43, once poured a large concrete block, which weighed a few hundred pounds, containing his brother’s gift inside.Another ...

Best movies 2023: A great year for unconventional films; not for superheroes Even as two contentious strikes – the Screen Actors Guild-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America – put a stopgap on numerous productions and tabled star-studded appearances, 2023 goes down as unexpectedly exceptional if somewhat weird year for movies.Veteran filmmakers such as 81-year-old Martin Scorsese (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and 86-year-old Ridley Scott (“Napoleon”) delivered massive, oft-discussed epics while first-time filmmakers such as Cord Jefferson (“American Fiction”) and Celine Song (“Past Lives”) astonished us and came out of the gate slugging out critical grand slams. The year, though, wasn’t so kind to superhero chums with both Marvel (Disney) and DC (Warner Bros.) confronting their version of Kryptonite: Dwindling audiences for the once-golden genre. (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” were exceptions.)So what did audiences show up for? “Barbenheimer,” for one. That kooky cultural phenomenon brought the scorching heat back to ...
