SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants were riding high a week ago on their flight home from Milwaukee. But they failed to capitalize on that momentum over a six-game home stand that culminated Sunday with their second loss in three games to the Baltimore Orioles.Whatever chances the Giants had at salvaging one series win this home stand were sapped in the third inning, as Anthony DeSclafani lost the ability to locate, Baltimore brought 12 batters to the plate, and the Orioles scored six runs, knocking San Francisco’s starter from the game and taking a commanding early lead. With an 8-3 loss, the Giants (29-30) dropped two of three to the Orioles, lost both series of their six-game home stand and fell one game under .500.DeSclafani had completed at least five innings and hadn’t issued more than two walks in all of his first 11 starts this season, but both streaks were snapped Sunday. Only Juan Marichal (23, 1968) and Madison Bumgarner (17, 2017) had reeled off more consecutive starts...Twins get good news on Royce Lewis after scary somersault, face-first landing

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Royce Lewis had a noticeable scrape on his forehead after providing a scare for the Minnesota Twins with an inadvertent somersault followed by a face-first landing. He still managed a smile on his face afterward, apparently unscathed. But he said he felt like he “ran into a car backward.”Lewis, who returned a week ago from his second ACL repair in his right knee, tried to tie the game by beating out a grounder to deep third in the eighth against Cleveland on Sunday. He was thrown out to end the inning, but with first baseman Gabriel Arias in his path he pulled up in an attempt to avoid a collision at the base. “He just gets in your way last second. I really had nowhere to go,” Lewis said.Instead, Lewis went sailing over Arias and hit the dirt head-first, bending his neck awkwardly upon impact. After an examination by the Twins and a slow climb to his feet, Lewis walked off on his own power. The Twins lost to the Guardians 2-1, but they dodged a more dam...Hovland delivers clutch putts and wins Memorial in playoff

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — Viktor Hovland handled the toughest stretch at Muirfield Village and delivered three clutch putts at the end to win the Memorial in a playoff over hard-luck Denny McCarthy on Sunday.Hovland closed with a 2-under 70 on another brutal test on a course baked all week by sun, forcing the playoff with a 30-foot birdie on the 17th — the only one on that hole in the final round — and saving par from behind the 18th green.Back to the 18th in the playoff, Hovland barely got onto the front of the green, some 60 feet away from the back pin, and two-putted by holing a 7-foot par putt.It was his fourth PGA Tour victory and first on American soil, this one with a $3.6 million winner’s check and a handshake from host Jack Nicklaus. The Norwegian’s previous wins were in Mexico twice and Puerto Rico.It was a crushing loss for McCarthy, one of the purest putters on the PGA Tour. He showed his touch by saving crucial pars and playing bogey-free on a day when the average...Principal Charity Classic Tour Scores

MILAN (AP) — Veteran AC Milan forward Zlatan Ibrahimović announced his retirement from soccer at the end of an emotional night at San Siro on Sunday.Ibrahimović was out of contract with the Serie A club at the end of the season and Milan had already announced there would be a special ceremony after its match against Hellas Verona to bid farewell to the 41-year-old Swede. He was given a guard of honor by his teammates as he walked out and struggled to hold back the tears as he took the microphone and said: “The time has come to say goodbye to soccer but not to you.”Ibrahimović scored 93 goals in 163 appearances over two spells at Milan. He returned in January 2020 and helped Milan win the Serie A title last year — his second league trophy with the Rossoneri. But he has struggled with injuries and only made four appearances this season, after undergoing a knee operation last year.“I have so many memories and emotions inside this stadium,” Ibrahimović said. “The first time I arrived you ...Wilson scores 27 with 10 boards, Parker hits 2 late FTs as Aces beat Fever, improve to 6-0

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Vegas Golden Knights were flying high after Game 1 in the 2018 Stanley Cup Final, having just beaten Washington and believing they were en route to a miracle championship for the first-year franchise. Then reality hit in a big way, the Capitals winning the next four games and celebrating on the Knights’ home ice and later on Las Vegas’ famed Strip after Game 5.It’s a memory that has stuck with seven current Vegas players — the six original Knights and Chandler Stephenson, who was on the Capitals at the time. That experience could be vital after the Knights opened this year’s Stanley Cup Final with a 5-2 Game 1 victory on Saturday over the Florida Panthers.“I think we’re a little bit more humble to the situation now,” said Jonathan Marchessault, who also played for Vegas in its first Cup Final. “We know that it doesn’t mean anything winning one game in one series. For us, the focus is on next game, and that’s how we’...Canady’s 1-hitter leads Stanford past Washington, into Women’s College World Series semifinals

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Stanford’s NiJaree Canady outlasted Washington’s Ruby Meylan in a battle of Pac-12 freshman pitchers to push the Cardinal into the national semifinals. Canady threw a one-hitter, and No. 9 seed Stanford beat No. 7 Washington 1-0 on Sunday in a Women’s College World Series elimination game.Canady, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s Freshman of the Year, struck out nine and didn’t allow a walk. She credited her coach for helping her stay relaxed.“Coach (Jessica) Allister always talks about slowing the game down, especially in this atmosphere, just trying to slow the game down,” Canady said. “I try to take a lot of deep breaths and just throw each pitch the best I can.”Meylan gave up four hits, struck out five and walked one. No earned runs were scored in the game. “It’s an old fashioned pitchers’ duel that we don’t see much of, but it was going to be whoever bent first,” Allister said. Kylie Chung’s RBI single in the sixth scored Taylor...Latest news
