JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel’s military directed the evacuation on Friday of all of the hundreds of thousands of civilians living in Gaza City ahead of a feared Israel ground offensive. The directive came on the heels of what the United Nations said was a warning they received from Israel to evacuate 1.1 million people living in the north of Gaza within 24 hours. The Israeli military order, which comes on the seventh day of a war declared by Israel following an unprecedented Hamas incursion and deadly attack, directs residents of Gaza City to flee deeper south into the Gaza Strip, a narrow coastal territory. Israel’s directive charged that Hamas militants were hiding in tunnels under the city.“This is chaos, no one understands what to do,” said Inas Hamdan, an officer at the U.N. Palestinian refugee agency in Gaza City while she grabbed whatever she could throw into her bags as the panicked shouts of her relatives could be heard around her. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Spencer Strider could not watch Nick Castellanos’ second home run off him in Game 4. The 20-game winner simply accepted his fate — he gave the ball to Atlanta Braves manager Brian Snitker and awaited a reception almost as rude as the homers.Strider put his head down and walked toward the dugout as 45,000 fired-up, towel-waving Phillies fans — that had heckled and derisively chanted his name since he warmed up — pointed fingers at the pitcher and gave him the business one more time.Strider never broke stride, never looked up. If he had, Strider might have read the sign that read “Bye-Bye Strider.”It was soon bye-bye Braves — once again an October departure in Philly. When the bats in a lineup that hit 307 homers this season fell silent, so did Atlanta in a 3-1 loss to Philadelphia in Game 4 of the National League Division Series on Thursday night.A year after the 101-win Braves were eliminated in Game 4 in Philly, this season’s 104-win edition suffered ...

Ex-Finnish PM Alexander Stubb warns of attempts to ‘intimidate’ NATO allies after pipeline leak

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 16:33:12 GMT

The possible sabotage of a pipeline connecting Finland and Estonia may be part of a campaign designed to intimidate Ukraine’s allies — and Helsinki should be braced for further destabilization attempts, former Finnish Prime Minister Alexander Stubb told POLITICO.“We are pretty sure it’s not the Swedes,” said Stubb when asked who or what could have caused a leak in the 77-kilometer-long Balticconnector pipeline. “We knew that when the war began in Ukraine, we knew there would be hybrid and cyber intimidation. This is part of it.”Stubb stopped short of accusing a particular actor, Russia or anyone else, of being behind the pipeline leak, which was discovered on Sunday. The director of Finland’s intelligence service, Antti Pelttari, said Thursday that Helsinki hasn’t ruled out the leak being the result of sabotage by a “state actor.”Yet the former prime minister, who’s held several other posts in government including for...
