“Simple Saturday” columns focus on basic technique and logical thinking.Bidding is not an exact science, and even world-class pairs reach contracts that are poor or worse. As declarer, you may need to assume the defenders’ cards lie favorably.Today’s South scraped up a 1NT response to North’s one heart and found himself propelled into game. He won West’s queen of spades in dummy and led the ace of clubs and then the jack. East refused to take his king, and the jack won. South then tried the A-K of hearts and a third heart, but East won and led another spade. South took his ace of diamonds and gave up. Down two.“Maybe I should have passed one heart,” South sighed.MAKEABLEThe contract was poor but makeable. When East plays low on the jack of clubs, South should overtake with his queen and lead a third club. He must assume that East has K-x-x. South will win four clubs, two hearts, two spades and a diamond.South has about an 18 percent ch...Word Game: July 15, 2023

Heavy rains and high water levels in Lake Ontario have created unsafe swimming conditions at three Toronto beaches this weekend.Marie Curtis Park East Beach, Sunnyside Beach, and Kew Balmy Beach are all flying the red flag after E.coli levels exceeded the City of Toronto’s established beach water quality standard of 100 E.coli per 100 ml of water.Conditions are based on E.coli counts in beach water samples taken over the past 24 hours.Toronto Public Health officials note that swimming in waters with high E.coli levels exposes bathers to increased risk of infections, including ear, eye, nose, throat and skin infections. If beach water is ingested, it may cause upset stomach, vomiting or diarrhea.Young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are at a greater risk for serious illness from infected waters.Every year between June and September, the City of Toronto’s Parks, Forestry & Recreation division collects daily water samples from Toronto’s supervise...Carlos Alcaraz will face Novak Djokovic in a Wimbledon men’s final for the ages

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — Novak Djokovic paid quite a compliment to Carlos Alcaraz. Before they’ll face each other in the Wimbledon final on Sunday, Djokovic was asked to size up Alcaraz — and he compared the kid to himself.Pretty good company.“He’s been incredibly successful in adapting to the surfaces and (to the) demands and challenges of opponents on a given day,” Djokovic said. “I see this as a great trait, as a great virtue. I see this as one of my biggest strengths throughout my career, that I was able to constantly develop, adapt and adjust my game, depending on the challenges, basically. That’s what he’s doing very early on in his career.”And Alcaraz’s assessment of Djokovic?“He has no weakness. He’s a really complete guy, really complete player. He’s amazing. He does nothing wrong on the court,” Alcaraz said. “Physically he’s a beast. Mentally he’s a beast. Everything is unbelievable for him.”The matchup on Centre Court at the All England Club to close the fortnight i...‘Blame Canada’: The latest legacy of Canada’s wildfire smoke

Another fragrant, hazy phenomenon is turning heads in the United States — only this time, beer fans in Canada will happily take the blame. It’s one of the newest IPA offerings from G-Five Brewing Company in Beloit, a southern Wisconsin community of about 36,500 people an hour’s drive southwest of Milwaukee, a city synonymous with suds.“Blame Canada” — what else would they call it? — is an easy-drinking session India pale ale inspired by the smoke-filled skies that were plaguing much of the U.S. Midwest and northeastern states earlier in the summer. It was the product of a collaboration with fellow Wisconsin brewers Rocky Reef, a partnership that happened to come together in mid-June when the wildfire smoke was at its worst, said Tim Goers, G-Five’s head brewer.“When you have a business that is cyclical like that, you don’t want your patrons to be outside because of air quality, so it does hurt business a little bit,” Goers said.Naturally...Latest news
