The white woman who accused Black teenager Emmett Till of whistling at and accosting her — which caused his 1955 lynching in Mississippi and galvanized a generation of activists to rise up in the Civil Rights Movement — has died at 88.Carolyn Bryant Donham died in hospice care Tuesday night in Westlake, Louisiana, according to a death report filed Thursday in the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office.Her death marks the last chance for anyone to be held accountable for a kidnapping and brutal murder that shocked the world.Till's mother, Mamie Till Mobley, insisted on an open-casket funeral in their hometown of Chicago so the world could see her 14-year-old son's mutilated body, which was pulled from a river in Mississippi. BERKELEY — Two men driving a Maserati SUV failed to steal a catalytic converter from a vehicle Thursday morning and pointed guns at a man walking his dog before fleeing, police said.The attempted theft, from a Toyota Prius, happened about 6:08 a.m. Thursday in the area of Bancroft Way and McGee Avenue in central Berkeley.Police said the men could not steal the converter because it was equipped with a theft prevention device.While the men were trying to steal the converter, a man walking his dog passed by, prompting the suspects to brandish a rifle and pistol at the man, police said. The man was not injured.The men then sped off in the white Maserati SUV, which had paper plates. They are being sought, police said. Detailed descriptions of the suspects were not released.So far this year there have been 231 catalytic converter thefts in Berkeley, authorities said. (KRON) -- An elderly care facility in San Mateo that was the site of a triple poisoning last year is in danger of losing its license. The State of California has filed a legal action to revoke the license for Atria Park of San Mateo, following the high-profile incident in which two residents died.The poisoning occurred in August of 2022. Investigators believe that residents of the facility were served a pitcher of cleaning solution that was mistaken for cranberry juice.
