CLAYTON, Mo. -- A former Velda City police officer gave up his badge after pleading guilty to shooting at a suspect after a traffic stop. Matthew Schanz, 36, was sentenced to five years in prison. A plea deal will suspend that sentence if he gives up his Missouri Peace Officer certification and refrain from employment in law enforcement or corrections while on probation.“This police officer was not entitled to shoot this individual because he was fleeing a traffic stop. This individual surrendering his badge was a good outcome of this incident - which could have been fatal,” states St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell. Broncos veteran safety Kareem Jackson will not be suspended by the NFL for his second illegal high hit in as many weeks, a league source confirmed Monday to The Post.Jackson, 35, was penalized and ejected in the second quarter of Sunday’s game against Washington after he launched into a high hit on Washington tight end Logan Thomas on a fourth-down touchdown reception. The Broncos safety was also flagged for unnecessary roughness in Week 1 for a high hit on Las Vegas wide receiver Jakobi Meyers.Meyers and Thomas were each diagnosed with a concussion and Meyers did not play Week 2 for the Raiders. Jackson apologized for that hit after the Week 1 game and said, in part, ““Obviously we don’t play this game to hurt guys. It’s a tough sport we play. … Unfortunately stuff like that happens. Definitely sending my thoughts and prayers to him.”Related ArticlesDenver Broncos | Broncos signing edge Ronnie Perkins off New England’s practice sq...Kiszla vs. Gabriel: Should the Broncos move on from Russell Wilson as their quarterback?

Kiz: If “Russ and Sean, a Bromance” was a TV show, network execs would’ve canned it after two weeks of the fall season. So let me start by saying I was wrong about how a veteran NFL coach with a Super Bowl ring could coax 10 victories out of Wilson and earn the Broncos a playoff berth. What startled me almost as much as Denver blowing an 18-point lead to Washington was how critical Payton was of Wilson after the loss. Is their football bromance on the rocks?Gabriel: Yeah, the postgame news conference was surprising in part because of how the game started. Hard to imagine that would have been the tone after Wilson started 5-of-6 for 146 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the early going. But here we are. Payton’s comments are particularly noteworthy after he specifically went after Denver’s operation in and out of the huddle in July when he called Nathaniel Hackett’s 2022 “maybe the worst coaching job in the history of the NFL.” Well, it’s not solved yet. And Payton ...CSU Rams coach Jay Norvell says Henry Blackburn receiving death threats after hit on CU Buffs’ Travis Hunter

FORT COLLINS — Jay Norvell said Monday during his weekly news conference that he wished for the timely return of injured CU Buffs star Travis Hunter, who was hospitalized after a hit by CSU Rams safety Henry Blackburn.“I hope everybody’s healthy; I hope that Travis gets healthy and gets back out there,” Norvell said at Canvas Stadium in advance of 0-2 CSU’s visit to Middle Tennessee this weekend. “We certainly don’t want to see anybody get hurt.”Hunter was removed from the game and later taken to a hospital after taking a hit near the home sidelines at Folsom Field from Blackburn late in the first quarter. He reportedly has a lacerated liver. Norvell described it as a “bang-bang” play and said that Blackburn and a family of a player received death threats during (and since) Saturday night’s Rocky Mountain Showdown, which the Rams lost in double overtime, 43-35.BOULDER, CO – SEPTEMBER 16: Colorado Buffaloes corne...Broncos signing edge Ronnie Perkins off New England’s practice squad, source says

By Claire Rush and Laura Ungar | Associated PressAlisha Alderson placed her folded clothes and everything she needed for the last month of her pregnancy in various suitcases. She never imagined she would have to leave the comfort of her home in rural eastern Oregon just weeks before her due date. But following the abrupt closure in August of the only maternity ward within 40 miles, she decided to stay at her brother’s house near Boise, Idaho — a two-hour drive through a mountain pass — to be closer to a hospital.“We don’t feel safe being so far away from a birthing center,” said Alderson, noting her advanced maternal age of 45. “I was sitting in a hair salon a few days ago and some people started joking about me giving birth on the side of the road. And in that moment, I just pictured all the things that could go wrong with my baby and broke down in tears in front of strangers.”A growing number of rural hospitals have been shuttering their labor a...Planned Parenthood resumes abortions in Wisconsin

By Harm Venhuizen | Associated Press/Report for AmericaMADISON, Wis. — Planned Parenthood resumed offering abortion services in Wisconsin on Monday after halting them for more than a year since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.Providers across the state stopped offering abortions following the June 2022 decision, fearing enforcement of an 1849 state law that appears to ban the procedure but had previously been nullified by the 1973 Roe ruling. A judge ruled last month that the 144-year-old law doesn’t apply to medical abortions. In light of the ruling, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin began offering abortions at clinics in Madison and Milwaukee again on Monday. The group did not say how many abortions it expected to perform but said appointments at its Milwaukee clinic on Monday were completely filled within 24 hours of announcing that services would resume.Without access to abortion care in Wisconsin for the past 15 months, many patients have sought assistance in n...Latest news
